NAMBUCCA HEADS BOWLING & RECREATION CLUB LTD

CHAIRPERSONS REPORT NOVEMBER 2023

For the Information of Members on Behalf of the Board of Directors

It was pleasing to see a good attendance for our Annual General Meeting held on the 15th of October 2023.

Under the current triennial election process, Graeme Porter and Nerida Blackford were elected to three-year terms as directors. Ray Hunt and William Coughlan have two-year terms remaining and Ken Rostron, David Oglivy and Margaret Flagg have one-year terms remaining.  The executive positions are:

  • Chairperson: Ken Rostron
  • Vice Chairperson: David Oglivy
  • Treasurer: Graeme Porter

On our Members – it was pleasing for your Board to approve over 50 new members at our recent October Board meeting! This is a significant vote of confidence from our locals who are coming along to enjoy our Club, our friendship, our staff and our great range of new food and beverages.

The new bar refurbishment is complete, and we are sure the members will enjoy the new benefits this will bring. With new beer line systems, members will enjoy the latest in beer line technology, new tap fronts, cold beer, new glass chillers, new food fridges and ice cream bar, plus our new milkshake machine. New TV monitors are also being installed above our bar areas. If you are yet to come in for a visit please do as our bar façade now has “street appeal”!

The Function Room is complete with two new air conditioners and two new TV monitors for members and guests’ benefit. Please note that we have function menus available for perusal and would love to host your next birthday/anniversary or family get together. This space is available for exclusive use without a room hire fee.

In our outdoor areas, new high tables are being made by our friends at the Men’s Shed and new high chairs are on order.

The Club has purchased some second-hand playground equipment from the Nambucca Heads Christian School. The playground equipment was able to be purchased at a cost lower than if new. The equipment will be erected by our own qualified tradespeople, with the help from Clinton from the Christian School. All compliance procedures will be followed prior to the opening of the playground.

It is also pleasing to report to the members that the re-levelling of the playing surface of number 1 green is taking place this week just in time for the inaugural Pelican Pots of Gold Tournament. The funds for this project as reported to members previously, have been sourced through a Service NSW storm recovery grant. Berry Bowling Systems are carrying out the necessary maintenance required to bring the green up to the standard required to hold more district and Bowls Australia events at our Club, plus the best possible playing surface for our new and future bowling members.

Our inaugural Pelican Pots of Gold kicks off Tuesday 14th November and there are still some team spots available. With over $20,000 in trophies and give-aways on offer it would be great to see one of our local teams walk away with the big prize! And if you are unable to compete come along and support the event and watch some great bowls with 3 days of action on offer.

The improvements to our greens and outdoor lighting areas continue for the benefit and safety of our members and guests. Our charter is to offer the best possible experience and promote the game of bowls through both on-green and off-green experience. Further upgrades to our external areas will continue.

It is pleasing to report that we have fixed the faults with our bore water system and can now once again water our bottom green and grass surrounds areas with this abundance of spring water. Water testing is again being carried out on our bore water with the possible potential of supply to areas of need in periods of drought.

As part of our social contract with our members, the director’s, management and staff are continuing to bring change and innovative ideas to your Club. It was pleasing to see the great roll up for our first Mega Raffle in October. This Sunday sees our second Mega Raffle with not just $3,000 worth of trophies and Members Draw on offer – we have $1,000 worth of hams to be won as well!

Its great to see the comraderie and gentle ribbing occurring with our Saturday Punters Afternoons which now has complimentary bar snacks on offer.

Our Lion Happy Hours continue to be a great way to catch up with friends and family and benefit from a cheap beverage! The Club’s partnership with DeBortoli Wines is growing and if you are yet to try a Chill Bill – well you better ask Jayden and the team for a sample!

Our bingo players have recently commenced enjoying our Function Room and we are looking at how we can re-invigorate our Auditorium to provide the ambience and delightful experience you, our members, have been requesting.

Also please note that we have changed our Members Draw. The Members Draw now has a capped limit of $3,000. This means everytime it hits $3,000 it must be won that night! And even when it re-starts it commences at $1,500 growing by $100 weekly if not won.

You may have noticed that there have been several larger functions held at the Club in recent weeks. This is something that you can expect to see going forward with our function enquiries increasing. The positive feedback we are hearing is pleasing and word of mouth advertising can not be priced!

 Staffing & Consulting Agreement

Through discussions with both boards from the Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club and the Nambucca Heads Bowling and Recreation Club Limited, it has been determined to enter into a consultancy role agreement. This Agreement is enacted through the time, support and expertise of Johnathon Zirkler. Johnathon’s role at present is to help in training staff, future staff and management training, strategic planning, future club renovations and development plans.

Johnathon also continues to help staff and management put in place our new systems upgrades, including new computers, software and point of sale equipment. For example, with our recent upgrades to our Swiftpos point of sale system, you can now pre-load amounts onto your membership card via a Top-Up account. To do this you can go to the bar and speak with our friendly staff who can apply any amount of funds you wish onto your members card. Then instead of using cash or card for each individual transaction you produce your members card and use the funds on that for purchases.

The Board with support from Johnathon has been revisiting our Clubs suppliers, revamping our Sponsors packages and sourcing new Sponsors. Some of the benefits working with other Clubs in the Valley may include:

  • Insurance cover and cost
  • Electricity costs and purchasing power
  • Sourcing joint solar power deals
  • Early and better priced supplier access for beverages and food
